Wisdom Teeth — What You Need to Know
Wisdom Teeth Removal in Paris & Texarkana, TX
We know that for many of our patients and their families, the thought of surgery can be daunting. However, we want you to know that we are dedicated to each patient’s safety and comfort. We are sensitive to patient (and parent!) needs and look forward to providing a stress-free wisdom teeth removal experience!
The Procedure
We carefully consider each individual’s case and design a custom treatment plan to minimize the need for more invasive surgery. We offer various sedation options to ensure comfort, including local, sedation, and general anesthesia. Once the anesthesia has taken effect, our expert surgeons will carefully make incisions to remove each tooth. After the teeth are removed, each site is cleaned of any tooth or bone debris. We then stitch gum tissue back together and place gauze over the extraction site to promote healing, manage bleeding, and help blood clots form.
Why do wisdom teeth need to be removed?
Simply put, there is no room in your mouth for wisdom teeth. The human mouth does not have room for the additional four teeth that are growing, as all of the spots are already taken by the rest of your adult teeth. This is why if wisdom teeth are not removed, they can cause problems such as gum infection, cysts, benign tumors, alignment issues, and damage to nearby teeth.
What is the cost of wisdom teeth removal?
It depends. Factors include teeth positioning, level of impaction, and the number of teeth that need removal. Once your wisdom teeth evaluation is complete, we will be able to provide a transparent cost estimate for surgery. Additionally, some costs may be covered by your dental insurance.
What can I eat after surgery?
For the first 24 hours, only eat soft, cold or warm foods, but nothing hot.
Do wisdom teeth stitches dissolve?
Yes. Dissolvable stitches disappear within a few days.
Can wisdom teeth grow back after extraction?
No, although it is possible (and rare) to have more than four wisdom teeth. If you do have additional third molars, it’s highly likely you’ll need them removed when the others are removed.
What are dry sockets?
If a blood clot is removed from the extraction site, the bone and nerves are exposed, which creates a dry socket. To avoid getting a dry socket, do not smoke tobacco products, use a straw, drink carbonated beverages, or eat hard, chewy, hot, or spicy foods! Do follow our surgical instructions provided by the practice during your consultation.

This practice was recommended by a friend. From the ease of making an appointment, (to my surprise) friendly front desk staff, and to Dr. Legan and his team’s bedside manner, professionalism, and skills, Oral Maxillofacial Surgeons of Northeast Texas went above and beyond my expectations. I highly recommend them to family and friends.

Dr. Hastings is very thorough. She spent a lot of time with me for pre-op consultation and made sure I did not have any unanswered questions. Great clinic staff. She has a very kind bedside manner. My operation was uneventful and with minimal post-op pain. Definitely less post-op pain than expected. Great doctor!

I’m not the type to leave recommendations but if I could I would leave a 100 for the care I received. In the Texarkana location & the Paris location. The staff from the front desk ladies to the x-Ray techs to the scheduling ladies. They were all very nice, very informative & made sure I felt comfortable. Dr Burks did my wisdom teeth plus 2 other teeth & placed 2 implants all at one time. He & the staff was very sweet helped me out to the car (where my husband was waiting for me) they gave me extra gauze. Dr Burks called me the night after my surgery at 8pm (after hours) to check on me and make sure I was okay & to see if I had any questions. The best care I have ever received. Thank y’all so much.

Dr. Legan was so kind throughout the whole process. I was an absolute nervous wreck and his kindness helped to calm my nerves! I don’t remember much after waking up, but my parents said I repeatedly said how kind he was. I would 10 out 10 recommend him to anyone! The work up girl was even so kind to help talk me anxiety away! She was too sweet, I wish I would’ve got her name to give her the credit she deserves!

At 34 years old, I had put off having my wisdom teeth pulled until I just couldn't delay anymore. I was dreading the procedure after having heard horror stories from so many people, especially those older than 30! Dr. Hastings did a FANTASTIC job with my procedure! The procedure was painless, and I woke quickly from the anesthesia with no side effects. I had very minimal pain afterwards (was able to control with ibuprofen and Tylenol), and I had no swelling (I used ice packs for the first 36 hours, which I'm sure helped). The anxiety and stress leading up to my procedure was much, much worse than the actual surgery! Again, I highly recommend Dr. Hastings and the staff at OMS!
